I was in your situation in the spring and sold my 20D and lenses. My 70-200/2.8L IS was a fabulous lens in terms of image quality, but it's ridiculously heavy and I'm not a pro. I 'got by' with my old point and shoot over the summer while I researched new point and shoots and super zooms etc.
Well guess what, I concluded in the end I could not live with the slowness and noise of a point any shoot. I didn't regret selling the other stuff though because some aspects of the 20D didn't sit well like the now tiny LCD and the noisy shutter and I sold it while it was still worth something.
After much agonizing, I went for a 40D and 17-55/2.8IS. I have a small and excellent Tamrac Explorer 2 bag (camera goes lens down) to carry it. I'm VERY happy with it. I won't get the giant 70-200/2.8L IS again or any zoom lens that's full frame because THAT'S a big factor in the weight, and carrying around all that glass that is unused just doesn't make sense to me.
So to me the combo I have isn't that huge and the image quality is excellent.

I suspect what they hated was the huge bag you lugged around and worried about and the times you made them wait while you changed lenses.
I did look into the G9 and it's an excellent camera for what it is, but I didn't like the lack of wide angle (yes they have an adapter and it's huge and I'd be back to square one), the noise (although the RAW is significantly better than the JPEG), and the slowness if you shoot RAW.
Anyway, I wish you all the best, but I suspect you'll be back. :) :)
